Assessment and Intervention

We have a diverse team of Educational Psychologists, Specialist Teachers, Counsellors and Higher Level Teaching Assistants.

Our psychologist team consists of applied psychologists who love to work regularly with schools to improve outcomes for children, young people, and the adults who support them. We offer services to schools on a number of levels – individual, group and whole school (systemic). Working with schools on a regular basis gives us the best opportunity to deliver embedded work within the school and affect the most change. We love nothing more than being able to support schools with tricky situations ‘in the moment’ and our embedded work means we often have that opportunity.

Our Specialist Teachers also love to get to know school staff and the children they support and find this is the best way to help ensure schools get what they need from their involvement. Many of our specialist teachers are qualified SENDCos and all have a wealth of experience working in different mainstream and specialist provisions including pupil referral units. They have expertise in the areas of Autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Specific Learning Difficulties, Communication Difficulties and Social, Emotional and Mental Health Needs including behaviour that challenges.

We have a SEMH/Behaviour specialist HLTA working on our team who is available to support schools with children who present with difficulties in schools or to run intervention groups with small groups of children. Currently, she works on interventions such as ‘Zones of Regulation’, ‘Emotional Regulation’, ‘Anger Management’, ‘Circle of Friends’, and ‘How Our Brains Work’. She can also coach and model strategies to staff or support staff to implement specialist advice.

Supervision Services

Acorn Psychology offers flexible, professional, and non-judgemental supervision packages to support the wellbeing and development of school staff. We provide both individual and group sessions for SLTs, pastoral teams, EYFS and SEND staff, and others working with complex or demanding situations.

SLT Supervision

Leadership roles often lack dedicated wellbeing support. We offer individual and group supervision to help leaders prioritise self-care, manage stress, and explore barriers to progress in a reflective, supportive space.

EYFS Supervision

Effective supervision is recognised as a key aspect of safeguarding in Early Years (Ofsted, 2019). Our model encourages reflection on key children, curriculum planning, developmental needs, and includes discussions around SEND, safeguarding, training, and wellbeing.

SENCO and Complex Needs Supervision

We support those working with complex needs, including staff in Designated Provisions. Sessions offer space to discuss development, navigate SEND systems, explore individual and group cases, and raise safeguarding concerns.

Safeguarding Supervision

These sessions offer focused support for staff making difficult decisions and managing risk. We help clarify roles, encourage joined-up working across agencies, and provide a ‘critical friend’ approach to safeguarding practice.

Supervision sessions typically last 45 minutes to an hour, with flexibility based on need. Packages can be arranged weekly, monthly, or half-termly and are costed via the Acorn Office Managers.

Supervision is about building trust, reflecting on practice, and supporting emotional wellbeing. When staff feel supported, they are better able to support others. Recognising our own needs is not self-indulgent — it’s essential, ethical, and sustaining.

Mediation and training

Building Positive Partnerships with Parents – mediation and training

Strong, trusting relationships between home and school are vital to a child’s success. We understand how complex this can feel particularly if communication becomes difficult or concerns arise.

Through recent specialist training in parental engagement, we’re now offering support to help schools strengthen their work with families. Our aim is not to “fix complaints,” but to help build trust, mutual understanding, and practical strategies that support collaboration and refocus everyone on the child’s needs.
This might include support around:

 Emotionally Based School Avoidance, helping families and schools work together
to refocus on supporting children,

 Rebuilding school–parent relationships where communication has become strained or reactive

 Early disagreement resolution around SEND provision, helping avoid escalation
and keep the focus on shared goals

 Supporting transitions—for example, between key stages or settings—where
families may feel particularly vulnerable

Whether it’s through tailored mediation, staff support in navigating challenging
conversations, or training in effective parental engagement, we offer a calm, constructive approach that is rooted in partnership.

We work from the principle that parents are experts in their own children, and that schools benefit from having clear, confident, and compassionate systems for working with families.

Sometimes, an independent perspective can help reset relationships and create space and processes for positive dialogues.

If your school community would value support in this area, whether through staff training, facilitation, or advice – we’d be happy to start a conversation.

“So far I have accessed the Zones of Regulation training. I also used it in a staff meeting about Zones, last week. We are now in the process of introducing them throughout the school!”
