Executive Functioning – Learning Presentation
Understanding Executive Functioning – Supporting Thinking and Planning Skills in the Classroom
Executive functioning refers to the mental skills we use to plan, organise, focus attention, remember instructions, and manage time and emotions. First defined by Lezak in 1982 as “the capacities for formulating goals, planning, and carrying out plans effectively,” these skills are essential for learning and everyday functioning.
This training explores the history and development of executive functioning, the core executive functions, and why they are critical to educational achievement. You’ll also gain insight into how executive functioning difficulties may present in children—and what practical strategies can be used to support them in school.
✅ What you’ll learn:
-
What executive functioning is and how it develops
-
The core components of executive functioning (e.g. working memory, flexible thinking, self-control)
-
The impact of executive functioning challenges on learning and behaviour
-
Practical classroom strategies to support children with executive function difficulties
This session is ideal for teachers, SENCOs, and learning support staff who want to build their understanding and better support children with planning, organisation, and self-regulation challenges.
